Horror double bill. Francis Ford Coppola's 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' is a big budget version of the famous vampire myth and derives inspiration from Stoker's original novel, rendering it via state-of-the-art effects, sumptuous set design and allusions to previous movies on the same subject. Victorian London provides the stalking ground for the lovelorn Transylvanian Prince Vlad (Gary Oldman), feeding off human blood as he seeks out the beautiful Mina (Winona Ryder). She is also courted by the more earthly affections of English gent Jonathan Harker (Keanu Reeves). Anthony Hopkins co-stars as eccentric vampire hunter Doctor Van Helsing. Whilst in 'Mary Shelley's Frankenstein' Kenneth Branagh stars and directs. When he is dicovered near death in the frozen wastes of the Antarctic by the seafaring leader of a scientific expedition, Victor Frankenstein (Branagh) relates his terrible tale as a warning to others. Obsessed since his time at University with creating life, Frankenstein set about the construction of a creature (Robert De Niro) which he managed to animate secretly in his laboratory. However, upon witnessing how abhorrent a thing it was, Frankenstein renounced and abandoned the creature, leaving it for dead. Returning to his native Vienna, Frankenstein was then horrified when his younger brother was found murdered and a trusted member of his household blamed and hanged. Confronted by his now sentient creation, Frankenstein discovers that it is aware of its origins and hungry for revenge...
