Musical triple. In the rock/pop musical 'Xanadu' (1980), based on the 1947 film 'Down To Earth', Olivia Newton-John plays the goddess of dance who is sent down from the heavens by Zeus to inspire a frustrated young artist and a nightclub owner to realise their dreams in the form of a rollerdisco. The real-life god of dance Gene Kelly makes an appearance. Shirley Maclaine stars in 'Sweet Charity'(1968) as dance hall hostess Charity Hope Valentine, a woman whose faith in the virtues of old-fashioned romance is knocked by a string of disastrous romances. Robbed of her earnings by her absconding boyfriend, she suffers further heartbreaks at the hands of an Italian movie star and a nervy insurance clerk. Bob Fosse's musical comedy features songs including 'Big Spender', 'Rhythm of Life' and 'There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This'. In 'Thoroughly Modern Millie' (1967), innocent country girl Millie (Julie Andrews) arrives in 1920s New York determined to vamp it up and become 'thoroughly modern'. She instantly marks out her new boss, Trevor Graydon (John Gavin), as a future husband, makes a new friend in the innocent Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler Moore) and takes rooms in an establishment run by Mrs Meers (Beatrice Lillie) - unaware that the latter is in fact a white slave trader. When Mrs Meers attempts to abduct Miss Dorothy, Millie calls upon paperclip salesman Jimmy (James Fox) and high society jazz babe Muzzy (Carol Channing) for help.
