Mason is the anti-hero protagonist, a man known to his superiors only by the code-name Cicero. Outwardly the efficient and discreet valet of the British Ambassador to Ankara in Turkey, he is in fact acting as a ruthless spy, photographing top-secret documents detailing plans for the D-Day invasion and selling them to the highest bidder - which just happens to be the Nazi government. 'The Man Between' (1953) is set prior to the end of the Cold War and Mason stars as a sardonic double agent. He finds himself falling in love with the beautiful and very British Claire Bloom while dogged by the pressures of political espionage and the attentions of his Cold War counterpart, Hildegard Neff. In 'The Man In Grey' (1943) Clarissa befriends impoverished stunner Hesther who then repays her friendship by trying to steal Clarissa's evil husband.
