Double bill of Paul Newman classics: 'The Sting' (1973) is set in 1930s Illinois. Young hustler Johnny Hooker (Robert Redford) vows revenge after his older partner (Robert Earl Jones) is murdered in retribution by kingpin Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw). Traveling to Chicago, Hooker teams up with old hand Henry Gondorff (Newman), and together they plan the ultimate 'sting' against Lonnegan. This re-teaming of Redford and Newman, following the success of 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid', won seven Oscars and helped re-popularise the syncopated piono music of Scott Joplin, which features heavily on Marvin Hamlisch's soundtrack. Alfred Hitchcock directs cold war thriller 'Torn Curtain' (1966). Famous nuclear physicist Michael Armstrong (Newman) defects to East Germany with the intention of acquiring a secret formula from enemy scientist Gustav Lindt (Ludwig Donath). However, Armstong's mission is placed in peril when he is followed by his assistant and fiancée, Sarah Sherman (Julie Andrews).
