Lawyer Harry Fabian (Robert De Niro) is a motormouth shyster who, humiliated in court by big-shot boxing promoter 'Boom Boom', decides to seek revenge by promoting some bouts of his own. Fabian turns to his married mistress Helen (Jessica Lange) for the financing, but everything he gets involved in turns to trouble and his dream of the big time soon begins to go very wrong. Adapted from the novel by Gerald Kersh, which had previously been filmed in 1950 with Richard Widmark in the lead role.
