Box set containing both versions of the popular comedy. In 'The Producers' (1968), failed Broadway producer Max (Zero Mostel) and timid accountant Leo (Gene Wilder) come up with a foolproof plan to make a fortune, by staging a musical which is guaranteed to flop and close after one night. A mad Nazi seems to have the perfect raw material - a tribute to the Führer entitled 'Springtime for Hitler'. However, the show is taken for a comedy classic, and becomes an overnight success. The two schemers, faced with financial ruin, determine to blow up the theatre in which the show is taking place. 'The Producers' (2005) is a remake of the classic Mel Brooks comedy based on the Broadway musical, starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick as Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom, a scheming theatrical producer and his mousy assistant. The producers hit upon the perfect plan to embezzle a fortune: raise far more money than you need to produce a sure-fire Broadway flop and then (since no one will expect anything back) Max and Leo can pocket the difference. To do this, they need the ultimate bad play, which they find in the musical 'Springtime for Hitler'. But their plans come to naught and the duo are taken completely by surprise when their new production is hailed as a toast-of-the-town hit.
