Romantic comedy with an all-star cast and an 'omnibus' structure, telling the story of five couples who are informed by their bumbling Justice of the Peace Melvin Bush (Victor Moore) that their marriage licences are invalid owing to a mistake on his part. The effect of this dramatic news varies enormously from couple to couple: Freddie Melrose (Louis Calhern) takes the opportunity to get revenge on his gold-digging wife Eve (Zsa Zsa Gabor); husband-and-wife radio presenters Steve and Ramona Gladwyn (Fred Allen and Ginger Rogers), despite their on-air lovey dovey act, are barely able to suppress their desire to slap one another; Jeff and Annabel Norris (David Wayne and Marilyn Monroe) are more caught up with Annabel's recent winning of the Mrs Mississippi pageant; Hector and Katie Woodruff (Paul Douglas and Eve Arden) can barely summon up the energy to talk to one another; while young GI Willie Fisher (Eddie Bracken) and his pregnant wife Patsy (Mitzi Gaynor) are alarmed to discover on the eve of Willie's departure for the Korean war that their unborn child has been conceived out of wedlock.
