During World War Two, the survivors of a torpedoed passenger ship - spoiled fashion journalist Connie Porthead (Tallulah Bankhead), tycoon Rittenhouse (Henry Hull), socially aware seaman Kovak John Hodiak), injured stoker Gus (WilliamBendix), timid radio operator Stanley Garrett (Hume Cronyn), nurse Alice (Mary Anderson) and shocked mother Mrs Higgins (Heather Angel) - take refuge on board a lifeboat. Their numbers are further swelled when a German (Walter Slezak) from the U-Boat responsible for the bombing is also taken on board. Slowly and subtly, the new arrival begins to influence the actions of his fellow passengers, manipulating each situation in order to manoevre the craft towards a rendezvous with his own people. This wartime propaganda piece was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and scripted by John Steinbeck, both of whom were nominated for Oscars.
