Box set containing five horror films from the silent era. In 'Der Golem' (1920) The Golem (Paul Wegener), a clay hulk brought to life by a magic scroll implanted in his chest, saves the Jews from Rudolf II (Gelehrter) in 16th Century Prague. Reverting to his inanimate form, the Golem is given the gift of life once more by a Rabbi's assistant who wants him to kidnap the beautiful Miriam. In 'Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde' (1920), witnesses to the behaviour of the debased Mr Hyde are shocked by his depravity and bestiality. The real mystery, which baffles polite Victorian society, is why Hyde should have as his friend and protector a decent man such as Doctor Henry Jekyll. And why are the two gentlemen never seen together in public? In 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' (1923), the hideously deformed bell-ringer Quasimodo (Lon Chaney) lives in the bell-towers of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. He strikes out viciously at the city folk after their constant taunting, but is saved from their wrath by a beautiful gypsy girl, Esmeralda (Patsy Ruth Miller). When she is accused of stabbing her lover, Quasimodo spirits her away into the bell-tower, but their friendship ends in tragedy. In 'Nosferatu' (1922), Count Orlok (Max Schreck) decides to move from his ruined castle to the city of Bremen and hires real estate agent Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) to make the arrangements for him. But Orlok is also the vampire Nosferatu, and when he takes a shine to Hutter's young wife Ellen (Greta Schroder), it seems that the worst is indeed possible. Finally, in 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari' (1920), Dr Caligari (Werner Krauss) runs a side show at a fair where a somnambulist predicts someone's death and that night the person is murdered. The somnambulist turns out to be a lunatic from a local asylum and Dr Caligari the asylum's insane director.
