Bollywood romance. Salim (Dilip Kumar) is the son of Emperor Akbar (Prithviraj Kapoor), the ruler of India. When Salim falls in love with Anarkali (Madhubala), a courtesan, The Emperor disapproves and decides to separate them. This causes Salim to declare war on his father but he loses and is sentenced to death. But Anarkali, in keeping with the ways of true lovers, decides to renounce her life to save Salim.
