The Mafia and FBI descend upon a small town when its Sheriff (Dennis Hopper) and his innkeeper friend (Mariel Hemingway) take police informant Maceda (Chris Sarandon) into their care. The secret service, led by agent Gene Gere (Peter Coyote), want Maceda to testify against high-powered drug lord Orosco, whilst Orosco is equally keen to locate Maceda before he spills the beans.
