A bullying, brutish strongman cruelly abuses his simple young mistress, who also assists him in his performances and acts as his virtual slave. They take up with a small travelling circus, where the girl's friendship with an acrobatic clown leads to tragedy. 'La Strada' won the Best Foreign Film Oscar in 1956 and cemented the reputation of director Fellini, as well as that of his wife, Giulietta Masina, who plays the lead. The score is by Nino Rota.
