Commentary (James L. Brooks (director))
Double-bill of 1980s drama. Directed by James L. Brooks, 'Terms of Endearment' (1983) follows the volatile relationship between the over-bearing Aurora (Shirley Maclaine) and Emma (Debra Winger), the daughter who cannot wait to escape her clutches. Covering 30 years, ranging from Emma's late-teens, her marriage to Flap Horton (Jeff Daniels), Aurora's difficulties facing her new role as a grandmother, and her relationship with ex-astronaut Garrett Breedlove (Jack Nicholson), the story then moves towards a tragic conclusion, as Emma discovers that she has cancer. In 'An Officer and a Gentleman' (1982) US Navy recruit Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) begins the thirteen-week basic training course which will qualify him to attend flight school. He immediately comes into conflict with the tough, no-nonsense Sergeant Foley (Louis Gossett Jr), with Foley selecting Mayo as the special recipient of his sadistic attentions. Mayo refuses to be broken however, and finds solace in his developing relationship with local factory girl Paula Pokrifki (Debra Winger).
