Homer (James Belushi) is a 30-ish, mentally-retarded dishwasher who is trying to hitchhike from Arizona to Oregon to visit his dying father. He picks up a travelling companion on the way, an escaped mental patient named Eddie (Whoopi Goldberg) who finds Homer in a junkyard after he has been robbed. The two become friends, although Eddie's frequent violent rages make it an uneasy alliance.
