Eddie Dawson (John Michie) believes that his role in life is simply to serve God. Teaching at the exclusive Kirkham's Abbey school, Eddie's fervent beliefs bring him into conflict with his employers. However, when he shelters a young single mother, he is expelled from his order and sent to London. Eddie witnesses city life and realises he is not merely a spiritual man, but prone to the same material temptations as everyone else. Eddie tries to rebuild his faith when he meets Jenny Stanton (Paula Hamilton), but his new life is shattered when he is betrayed by an old friend.
