Released to coincide with the centenary of the birth of one of Hollywood's greatest directors, George Stevens, this collection contains two of the director's greatest films, plus two acclaimed documentaries. 'Woman of the Year' (1942) is the film that united Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy off screen and on. A high-powered political columnist (Hepburn) falls for a lowly sportswriter (Tracy) working on the same paper, although they are poles aparts socially and intellectually. However, their relationship takes a turn for the worse after they marry, with she unable to adapt to the role of housewife, and he driven to drink by her intransigence. Hepburn won an Oscar for her role. The epic saga 'Giant' (1956) begins with Texas cattle baron Bick Benedict (Rock Hudson) taking a non-Texan wife, Leslie (Elizabeth Taylor). The story then traces two generations of his family, alongside the life of disreputable ranch-hand Jett Rink (James Dean), who strikes it rich on an oil well and falls in love with Leslie. Stevens won an Oscar for his work, and the film garnered nine further nominations - including one for James Dean, who was killed soon after filming. The documentary 'D-Day to Berlin' (1994) examines the liberation of Berlin. Narrated by Stevens' son, George Stevens Jr, the film contains rare colour footage of some of the most important events of the end of World War 2, including the liberation of Paris, the D-Day Armada and the nightmarish discovery of Dachau concentration camp. Finally, in the award-winning retrospective documentary 'George Stevens: A Filmmaker's Journey' (1984), made by the director's son, contemporaries of George Stevens including Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Warren Beatty, Frank Capra, Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, John Huston and Elizabeth Taylor offer insights into the life and times of the great man. The documentary also includes behind-the-scenes home movie footage.
