The first five episodes from this Seventies television drama. Ten-year-old Sam is brought to the Yorkshire mining village of Skellington in 1934, when his mother, Dora, leaves his father and moves back to the village she was brought up in. However, Dora's family are not well-off, her father Jack has been out of work for nearly 8 years, and so both Sam and his mother find it hard to get by. Once they begin to find their feet, Dora takes up with Alan Dakin and eventually moves in to his house with Sam, despite her family's disapproval.
