Part of Ely Landau's 1970s American Film Theatre series, this stage-to-screen production of David Storey's play is directed by Lindsay Anderson, and stars Alan Bates, Brian Cox and James Bolam as three brothers returning to the bleak Northern mining town where they grew up to celebrate their parents' (Bill Owen and Constance Chapman) 40th wedding anniversary. Long-buried and painful truths bubble to the surface as the brothers talk and argue, while their mother bustles around them and their father waits uneasily for whichever crisis might erupt first.
