Oscar-nominated Michelle Pfeiffer plays Lurene, a bored hairdresser locked in a suffocating marriage. After the Kennedy assassination she decides to attend the President's funeral and, against her husand's wishes, boards a greyhound bus for Washington. Whilst travelling across the States she gets involved with a black man, Paul (Dennis Haysbert), and his daughter Jonbell. A road accident causes the bus to stop and Lurene realises that all is not what it seems. Paul appears to have kidnapped Jonbell so Lurene reports them to the police, only to discover he has in fact rescued his daughter from beatings at her orphanage. The three of them then flee from the police and the film follows the development of their relationship on the run.
