The true story of Barbara Graham, a loose-living woman who went to the gas chamber for a crime she claimed she did not commit. Barbara (Susan Hayward) comes from a broken home and drifts into a life of prostitution and petty crime. In San Francisco, she serves a prison sentence for providing false testimony. Upon her release she becomes involved with gamblers, marries the corrupt Henry Graham (Wesley Lau), and is introduced into the drug underworld. By the time she gives birth, Barbara is an addict.
