In 1913 an army lieutenant (Gerard Philipe) takes a bet that he can win any woman in the town where his regiment is quartered. A beautiful divorcee (Michele Morgan) is chosen, but what begins as a joke turns into love and the former Don Juan must try to overcome his reputation and remain faithful. Light relief is provided by Lucie (Brigitte Bardot) and her affair with the lieutenant's friend.
