John Candy (who died during the making of this film) stars as drunk wagon-master James Harlow, who is employed by the unhappy inhabitants of a town called Prosperity to lead them back to their homes in the East (a backwards western). When the group discover that Harlow was a member of the infamous Donner family (who ended up eating each other when stranded on a mountain in the West) the Railroad company get worried and try to turn the party back West - it's bad publicity for Westerners to return East and let it be known that it is not Paradise. However, help is on hand as the local Indians are only too willing to aid settlers returning home...
