Jack Lemmon won plaudits for his harrowing performance as an alcoholic in J.P. Miller's big screen adaptation of his television play. Advertising man Joe (Lemmon) is just a social drinker when he meets and falls in love with teetotaler Kirsten (Lee Remick). The two fall in love and wed, but the pressures of Joe's job result in him drinking more each day. Kirsten eventually joins him in hitting the bottle, and the pair's descent into alcoholism is not even halted when Kirsten gives birth to a baby daughter. Henry Mancini's score won an Oscar, with both Lemmon and Remick receiving Academy Award nominations.
