Christine Lahti turned her hand from acting to getting behind the camera with this comedy drama. Jennifer (Leelee Sobieski) is a typical 17-year-old; a tattooed goth, heavily into death-laden music and poetry. Living with her kooky mother, Jennifer gets a job in a clothing store to escape and becomes fascinated with her straight-laced, middle-aged boss, Randall Harris (Albert Brooks). In order to impress him she begins to change her appearance and gets promoted. Once Randall begins to take an interest in her the pair become close friends, as they realise they are both as lonely as each other, and help to build up each other's confidence.
