Wilson Joel (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is a web designer whose wife Liza has recently committed suicide. Unable to open the letter she left for him, Wilson begins drifting and his behaviour becomes increasingly anti-social and self-destructive. He gets increasingly addicted to sniffing petrol fumes, begins to neglect his work, and when a female colleague makes advances towards him, he runs away and goes on a cross-country roadtrip. However, he also begins to form a fledgling friendship with model aeroplane enthusiast Denny (Jack Kehler).
