Comedy western starring Jack Nicholson as Henry Moon, an outlaw who narrowly escapes a lynch mob by marrying local spinster Julia Tate (Mary Steenburgen) and taking advantage of a local by-law which states that married men are exempt from hanging. However, after the danger passes, Julia insists that Henry keep up his part of the bargain and help out with the abandoned goldmine she has on her property. Meanwhile, Henry's old gang sense money in the air and begin keeping a careful watch on the oddball couple.
