When unpopular college student Alicia (Mia Kirshner) is assigned to work on a sociology project with rich student Hadley (Meredith Monroe), she finds that it is a passport into the high-flying cliques in which Hadley circulates. Surrounded by recreational drugs and dangerous thrills, Alicia's desire to be accepted into this exciting new world soon gets her in trouble, and after a drug-induced collapse, she ends up seriously ill in hospital. When the local sheriff Artie Bonner (Taye Diggs) is then called in to investigate, it's not long before he begins to suspect that Alicia's collapse might have been the result of an attempted murder.
