Jane Campion's acclaimed film is based on New Zealand writer Janet Frame's autobiographical trilogy, 'An Angel at My Table' which charts the early life of gifted but socially inept and shy Janet. When a family tragedy takes her to the brink of a nervous breakdown, she is wrongly diagnosed as schizophrenic and promptly institutionalised. Eight years later she is in line for a lobotomy when word comes that the troubled writer has won a prestigious award and she is released.
