When much-disliked architect George Monroe (Kevin Kline) discovers that he has terminal cancer, he decides it is time to repair some of the damage he has left in his wake. With one summer left to live, he begins reconstructing his dream house on the Malibu coast, and as the building project develops he also tries to rebuild some of the relationships which have meant the most to him.
