Marie Drillon (Charlotte Rampling) is a middle-aged university lecturer who has been happily married to her husband Jean (Bruno Cremer) for over 25 years. One day, whilst the couple are taking a holiday at their country home and visiting the beach, Jean completely disappears. Marie returns to Paris alone, but even after the police find Jean's body, she continues to think of him as if he were still around. Her friends try to help, but Marie becomes increasingly lost in her own fantasies.
