Quarterback Joe Pendleton (Warren Beatty) is in training for the Superbowl when he is killed in a freak accident. Removed to the afterlife, he complains that there must have been a mix-up, that he wasn't ready to die yet, and it turns out that his heavenly hosts agree with him. However, he can't be returned to his previous body because that has been cremated already, so instead he is returned to the body of a recently-murdered millionaire. Now, while practising to play football once again, Pendleton must elude those who killed the millionaire in the first place, and also attempt to woo a beautiful anti-corporate campaigner (Julie Christie).
