Ittefaq means coincidence. Sometimes life appears to be a string of coincidence unrelated to any logic. This is a coincidence of a man charged for murder fleeing from the law and getting involved in another murder - a murder he didn't commit. A lonely night... a comfortable house... a beautiful girl alone. Rekha (Nanda) switches on the radio and hears that a lunatic murderer has escaped from the mental asylum. The door bursts open and Dilip Roy (Rajesh Khanna) enters. That is when a chance encounter turns a quiet night into a nightmare - Rekha is reduced to a prisoner in her own house.
