Lala Kedarnath (Balraj Sahni) is a proud, respected businessman, the head of large family, and a man confident of his own destiny. But this confidence proves misplaced - for one day, out of the blue, a terrible earthquake hits the town where he lives, scattering his family and changing their lives forever. The eldest son Raja (Raj Kumar) becomes a criminal, the second son Ravi (Sunil Dutt) is adopted by a rich family, the youngest son Vijay (Shashi Kapoor) is left to look after their sick mother, and Lala himself is imprisoned for murder. As the years roll by, the paths of the different family members cross many times, but they continue to remain strangers and reunion looks increasingly unlikely.
